Stewart Island is as far south as man normally lives, off the south coast of New Zealand. Although it is the size of the Isle of Wight it has about l00 houses on 5% of the land and about 10km of roads. But unlike its northern counterparts it is lushly green, with lovely golden beaches in small coves. The native flora is almost tropical, which is disconcerting since next stop south is Antarctica.
